Guests:
Matthew Fogg is a retired Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal and has recently returned to D.C. from Ferguson. He won the largest ever ($4 million) employee Title VII discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice. His book, Bigots with Badges (the same as a 1997 New York Post front page headline depicting his story) is forthcoming. He recently appeared on the panel "Police Body Cameras and Recording Misconduct" at the Cato Institute. See video on C-Span.org. He has been participating in protests in D.C. organized by the Hands Up CoalitionDC. Protests are continuing in front of the Department of Justice.

When the Police Kill the Populace – police misconduct, violence and race
Quoted in a recent article: A former US Chief Deputy Marshal stated that the new US government idea about equipping officers with body cameras would not change the racist actions of police: "Body cams or not, the problem you have to deal with is that the system is so systemically racially biased in its nature. America saw Eric Garner get choked to death on televised video just like we saw Rodney King get viciously beaten on video in our living rooms and still all the police misconduct was later justified. As a highly decorated veteran law officer, I knew the system culture would back me up, to include police, prosecutors and judges if my suspects were black but, if they were white, I was more concerned with that same system, challenging my decisions and seeking out wrongdoing on my behalf." Fogg said.
Guests:
Melvin Goodman is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy and adjunct professor of government at Johns Hopkins University. His 42-year government career includes tours with the U.S. Army, the CIA, the Department of State, and the Department of Defense. His most recent books are The Failure of Intelligence: The Decline and Fall of the CIA and National Insecurity: The Cost of American Militarism.
Topics
The Dumbing Down of National Security Policy – secretaries of defense resignations and appointments
In his recent piece "The Dumbing Down of National Security Policy" following the resignation of Chuck Hagel, Goodman wrote: "The forced resignation of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel points to two major problems in the national security policies of the Obama administration that have not been corrected in the past six years. The obvious problem is the failure to name a powerful secretary of defense who will not let senior general officers get out in front of White House policy. The more serious problem is the failure of President Barack Obama to name powerful individuals in the field of national security who understand the need for strategic thinking. With the exception of Secretary of State John Kerry, President Obama's appointments throughout the foreign policy bureaucracy have been mediocre at best…The inability of three secretaries of defense [under President Obama] to ride herd on senior general officers at an important juncture in national security policy points to the need for a seasoned expert who can reexamine use of force issues, gain control over weapons acquisition policy, and take a hard look at defense spending. The mainstream media is already speculating that former deputy defense chiefs, such as Ashton Carter or Michele Flournoy, are leading candidates to replace Hagel but neither one is strong enough for such a difficult assignment."

Her work has appeared in The Nation, The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Foreign Policy in Focus, and The Moscow News, where until recently she was an editor and senior correspondent. In 2002 she returned to Moscow to write about Russia, where she lives with her husband and daughter.
Topic
The Putin Mystique
In her journalistic career, she has traveled throughout Russia to report on modern Russian politics. She has interviewed oligarchs and policemen, bishops and politicians, rock stars and writers, factory workers and peasants, and other ordinary Russians. Her book is a vivid and revealing exploration of the way in which myth, power, and even religion interact to produce the love-hate relationship between the Russian people and Vladimir Putin.

You can read some of her recent work here and some of her older work here. You can also follow her on Twitter: @scrawnya

Guests:
Roy Eidelson is a clinical psychologist and the president of Eidelson Consulting, where he studies, writes about, and consults on the role of psychological issues in political, organizational, and group conflict settings. He is a past president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, associate director of the Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at Bryn Mawr College, and a member of the Coalition for an Ethical Psychology.

Trudy Bond is a counseling psychologist in independent practice in Toledo, Ohio. She is a member of the Coalition for an Ethical Psychology and on the steering committee of Psychologists for Social Responsibility. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Oklahoma State University at age 26 and moved to Toledo, Ohio where she became licensed to practice psychology in 1980. As an independent psychologist, Dr. Bond has filed complaints with state licensing boards and the APA regarding individual psychologists implicated in the torture and abuse of detainees at Guantanamo.
Topic
The Complicity of Psychologists in CIA Torture
From their article in Counterpunch

"Two names appear dozens of times in the committee's summary: Grayson Swigert and Hammond Dunbar. These are the pseudonyms that were given to James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. It has been known for several years that these two contract psychologists played central roles in designing and implementing the CIA's torture program. Now we also know how lucrative that work was for Mitchell and Jessen: their company was paid over $80 million by the CIA. …

Responding to the new Senate report, the American Psychological Association (APA) was quick to issue a press release distancing itself from Mitchell and Jessen. The statement emphasized that the two psychologists are not APA members – although Mitchell was a member until 2006 — and that they are therefore 'outside the reach of the association's ethics adjudication process.' But there is much more to this story. After years of stonewalling and denials, last month the APA Board appointed an investigator to examine allegations that the APA colluded with the CIA and Pentagon in supporting the Bush Administration's abusive 'war on terror' detention and interrogation practices.

Guests:
Tim Wise is the author of six books, including his highly-acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, as well as Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority, and Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equity. His next book, Culture of Cruelty: How America's Elite Demonize the Poor, Valorize the Rich and Jeopardize the Future, will be released in early 2015. He has contributed chapters or essays to over 25 additional books and his writings are taught in colleges and universities across the nation. His essays have appeared on Alternet, Salon, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, The Root, Black Commentator, BK Nation and Z Magazine among others.
Topics
In the wake of recent coverage of the multiple shooting deaths of mostly black males by mostly white police officers, we discuss Race Relations and Policing.
Wise has been featured in several documentaries, including "White Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America" (from the Media Education Foundation), which has been called "A phenomenal educational tool in the struggle against racism," and "One of the best films made on the unfinished quest for racial justice," by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva of Duke University, and Robert Jensen of the University of Texas, respectively.
He also appeared alongside legendary scholar and activist, Angela Davis, in the 2011 documentary, "Vocabulary of Change." In this public dialogue between the two activists, Davis and Wise discussed the connections between issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and militarism, as well as inter-generational movement building and the prospects for social change.
Guests:
Christine Hong is an assistant professor of literature at UC Santa Cruz and an executive board member of the Korea Policy Institute (http://kpolicy.org/). She is co-editor with Hazel Smith of the Critical Asian Studies double issue on "Reframing North Korean Human Rights" (45:4 (2013) and 46:1 (2014). Hong recently co-wrote "Stranger than Fiction: The Interview and U.S. Regime-Change Policy Toward North Korea"
Topics
The media coverage of North Korea as a threat has missed that the country may be responding to being threatened. We discuss the recent coverage of North Korea framed by the release of the movie The Interview
Whether in Hollywood or Washington, the only permissible narrative for North Korea is what Donald Macintyre, former Seoul bureau chief for Time magazine, has called "the demonization script." Not only have the dream machines of the entertainment industry long played an instrumental role within American theaters of war, but also, U.S. officials and political commentators often marshal the language of entertainment—for example, the description of U.S.-South Korea combined military exercises as "war games" and the Obama administration's references to the Pentagon's "playbook" with regard to North Korea—when describing U.S. military maneuvers on and around the Korean peninsula…Claiming to have done conducted "a lot" of research on North Korea, Seth Rogen has insisted that The Interview holds up a mirror to North Korea's reality: "We didn't make up anything. It's all real." His conclusion about North Korea after conducting exhaustive research? "It was f–king weird." Yet, even as the curtains go up in movie theaters across the United States for The Interview, the centrality of the North Korean demon to Obama's pivot policy within Asia and the Pacific, itself a historic theater of U.S. war, may prove to be far stranger than fiction.
